The White Buffalo Calf poster captures a critical moment in Yellowstone National Park history: the birth of the sacred white buffalo calf.
It displays the powerful words of Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle: “The birth of this calf is both a blessing and warning. We must do more.”
Chief Arvol’s words convey the significance of the birth of the white buffalo calf, given the name Wakan Gli, meaning “Returns Sacred” and “Comes Holy”). The calf’s arrival marks the return of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, the one who first presented the first bowl pipe and bundle to the Lakota people and taught them to live and pray.
She told the first people that, upon her return, Mother Earth would be sickly. Today, that prophecy has come true.
